What do you do when you encounter someone who may be experiencing homelessness?

Often times we see someone in crisis and turn to emergency services for help. However, this can often do more harm than good. The criminalization of poverty and homelessness has lasting effects on both the individuals and the community. If you meet someone who is experiencing a medical emergency, please call 9-1-1 and request an ambulance. If they are simply experiencing homelessness, however, please call Street Outreach first. You can also direct them to some important resources.

• Coordinated Intake is the front door to the public shelter system in Cuyahoga County. As a “housing first” community, Cuyahoga County guarantees shelter the same night. Someone experiencing homelessness can call CI between 8 am- 8 pm at 216-674-6700.

• 2-1-1 is a number you can dial in any county and be connected to a United Way employee who can help you find resources for yourself or someone else.

• Street Cards are produced by NEOCH each year, with an updated list of meal sites and other resources.
